002nd Plot--on the nature of the "soul" [Video]

[The screen was dark, hazy as always, but that loud, metal-filtered voice rang just as clear as anyone else's.]

A travesty. So, believing us to be the mice they think we are, we are shown second hand, by Nyarlathotep itself, that our worlds are well and truly gone and there is nothing left but this tower.

...

A pity I find myself seeing everyone "convinced" by this merely because beings of magic also exist. Doom, however, does not merely accept a truth unless it has become absolute. I am a man of science as much as I am of magic, and I will not be convinced to despair so easily!

One thing I do find to be true, however, is the nature of one's personal aura, the "soul" if you will. It would explain the resurrection and the fact that my magic hasn't been detecting anything inside of a person's body, yet I can use magic at all still. A complicated process, yet ingenious, really. Few could understand how it works. Even Doom would not find it easy to dismantle the workings of what are apparently Outer Gods within his own lifetime.

I will not tolerate words to convince me otherwise of these recent matters. Especially if you are a young man or lady who believes their own lives to be the most tragic and filled with self righteousness.

At least some people still have the common sense to not believe the things this place tosses around so wantonly.

Maybe this tower isn't so full of idiots as one might think.

Good, at the very least it'll prove entertaining.

Things will definitely change, whether it was trickery or not.

Now it'll be a matter of who can adjust and who will fall.

True or not has never more than passingly mattered to me. [All that she was and cared for was dead, and the one person of meaning to her from her world was here... sort of.]

However, a fancy light show and words are only that.

Precisely. Especially after Doom having seen the mountains of deceit long before he was brought before this tower.

Perhaps you are as encumbered by those easily swayed, as much as Doom.

Not really. I am used to that sort of foolish talk. It is not as if the images they see are not shocking, convincing. It can make them doubt, make them wonder.

In the end, though, none of it really matters to how we treat what is here.

Hmph. Indeed. Progress was not made, and progress is all that concerns me.

[His eyes turn green for just a moment. A flash of brilliant, emerald power.]

Have you found anything more...interesting about these "inmates"?

Mixed. It has been made more complicated by our ... let's just call them guests. That said, there is a strange group that seems to roam these halls. I have not fully figured them out, but I am curious.

Are you familiar with something called a 'Troll?'

I am familiar with certain kinds, yes. The classic trolls of Norse Mythology are...closer to fact then is to be believed. And they are as hideous monsters as the traditions said they are.

But I digress. What sort of 'trolls' are abound in this place, if they are not from the worlds of the Nine Realms?

No. Not that sort. These things remind me far more of western demons. Gray skinned, horned, and with strange ways of speaking and violent tendencies. I have seen some ... strange ways of making text messages. I am not quite sure how to approach them, since they seem both young... and yet not, and very strange in the way they speak.

This is new to me. I, too, can hardly call that a troll after having seen what I have seen. These posts made by "troll" hands, I have seen them before. Different colors, consistent and nonsensical syntax. A pale contrast and a startling fixation towards teenager prattle.

They call themselves "trolls"?

That was what the one I spoke with at any length said, yes. She seemed more or less coherent, though I haven't seen her around as much since. I get the impression that they are ... at the very least more robust than a human. Their mental states, though...

They aren't stable.

["Few here truly are," the wicked doctor thinks.]

A pity. And for a second, they sounded like they might've actually posed some sort of a challenge.

"Hard to say. I think they have to be taken individually. I might try my blades against one, just to see if they stack up," she said, nodding. "The knowledge of the process takes the teeth out of the risk dying gives, after all."

"Hm hm hm. A lust for battle calls you?" He held back saying "assassin" this time. Only just. "I, too, would like to see how they stack up, but not to me. Doom is not so easily defeated, and none here could manage it. Rather, I would like to see how they measure against monsters, if anything."

A small orb of light skittered around in the background.

"Ah yes, those creatures..., there was something I ran across below, in the graveyard," she said, reaching up to tap her chin and frowning. "Mindless, slavering and destructive, they were like zombies but faster and mechanical as well as biological. When they drew close, they were electrified and sometimes detonated as they tried to beat a person to death."

"Powerful, but their mindlessness was a weakness. Husks, I think they were called."

"Husks."

Something that needed to be remembered...and it was.

"The graveyard floor. A tool used to goad the minds of the inhabitants into despair. A clever--if heartless, even by my standards--ruse. And you have in turn fought these creatures before, these husks? Doom has encountered no such creature before, and he has encountered unthinkable monsters many times in the past!"

I get the impression that monsters from many different worlds are here, so things familiar to you and unfamiliar should be found in the halls. Let us hope nothing from certain novels becomes commonplace.

"If fiction is fact, then that sentiment is far too late. This infernal tower is as infuriating as it is interesting. And Doom knows when something is deliberate or not," comes the metallic voice.

The interdimensional cage--how classic. The nostalgia was overwhelmingly unpleasant. "It is as....how do the Americans put it...'the players have changed, but the game hasn't', I believe."

"Essentially, yes," she said with a shrug, looking over at the screen and seeming not necessarily disinterested, but eternally blase. "As I encounter more of the players, though, you will hear about it. The only other thing I have encountered is something called... pokemon."

"In some ways, they're more disturbing than the trolls and denizens of Gensokyo combined."

"Hrrm. That annoying sort of creature that I've heard skittering across the network. But do go on. Doom will not turn down information offered from those who do not bore him," came the voice again.

If it wasn't for his hammy way of talking, he might as well be a robot. He looked the part.

"The variety is almost limitless. I am not entirely sure how many different sorts there are, but I have seen and... experienced a few," she said, shaking her head. "Each seems to have an energy type that it focuses on. Electricity, fire and water are good examples of the sorts of powers they wield. Some of them seem harmless, but I get the impression that a few of them might theoretically have world-shattering powers."

"The disturbing side is that they seem to all be carried around by what are basically children, as if it were normal."

"Children? Utilizing control over hundreds of monsters?..."

Oh how bad that always went. Never seen it before, personally, but he knows the implications. "Chaos!"

Although it might not be as bad as all that. When high schoolers are in control of supernatural beings, they tend to be a little unhinged with them with a frightening frequency. It was worrying.

"And these monsters are powerful? Bah, of course they must be..."

Doom needs to chill and take some grammar lessons so he stops switching his tenses all around

"Each seemed to have control over three or four at a time, but all the same it is as you say," she said, nodding to that. "Chaos."

"And of course they are. Their powers vary greatly, and of course the more they are trained, the more powerful they become, but that is to be expected. I believe a few may even be psychic..."

"Hm..."

A bit much to take in. But he could take it well.

"This makes things even more interesting, and dangerous. I've no doubt this will be a problem in the future.

"By the way, have you visited the new, higher floors as of late?"

"I rather like the floor with the torture implements. It has such lovely toys...," she said with a slightly twisted giggle. "I have not visited many, but I have been to some of them."

"They have a certain...different aesthetic, when compared to all of the earlier floors. Especially that blocky one..."

The evil doctor had had a bad experience at that place once.

"And fairy rings. Fascinating, unique to this tower, and there is also a lavish ballroom, fit to Doom's taste!"

"It has its ... appeal, yes. The fairy circles I have not entered yet. Something about those makes me... nervous," she said, having a little familiarity with the old, European tales.

"It is old magic, and it is unique. Doom was gladly uninterrupted during his research of the....'Tower Breed' as it were. This breed--complete with unique fairy rings, even!--may not even be like the monsters here, changed as they are by the Outer Gods' powers.

Such interesting creatures, really. Truly, truly are they to permeate every facet of reality, magic or otherwise!"

His grandiose speech rose up again. The ravings of a real mad scientist.

"If the tales are to be believed, a very unusual people," she said with a nod while his tone rose in crescendo. "At the same time they can be very difficult to traffic with for the unwary."

"Which brings me to my latest part of the boon--" he said, the light from behind him landing on his dark, metallic gauntlet. "--this."

The light dissipated, revealing what would on first look greatly resemble a Fae humanoid creature. Except it wasn't. Its eyes were unblinking, its head swiveled on an axis. Mankind's hands wrought this thing with tools and machines, a true creature of Order to resemble Chaos with its all metallic, gray carapace, much like its creator. "I admit, it is my first in creating a prototype that resembled a creature of myth*. Tried a dragon once, but I had to abandon that project, unfortunately. Doom's creations are the pinnacle of robotics, no matter how small nonetheless!"

"A creation of yours... to bargain with them?" she asked curiously, an eyebrow raised. "If that is the case, it might do well with the dwarves, though I am unsure what it is they would have here for those seeking their aid."

"More just a complete emulation of their forms. Fairy bodies carry with them symbological magicks within their very forms. And while I cannot replicate this completely, the various scientific enhancements I have made will make one think otherwise.

"This is not to talk to them--it would be destroyed on sight--as Doom possesses the knowledge to do that himself! Rather, this is merely a prototype to something only I am privy to!"

Its head rotates a complete circle on its axis. Despite this, its movements are fluid enough to simulate any living things motions, if only with inhuman precision.

"Interesting. You've been keeping yourself busy in your silence, I see. I wonder if anyone unwisely assumes you are brooding in peace when you are not heard from..."

"Few outside my world even know what I am truly capable of, as you have seen yourself! And other than these present, the others are mere fools, if still quite powerful," von Doom says. "Strength is but one aspect of true power."

"A good sense of timing goes a long way, more than anything else. Knowing your own powers, limits and when to use them can change the flow of a fight."

"That is only half of it. The rest, as I say, shall remain secret," he notes.

"You will find the finished prototype within your personal mail box by tomorrow afternoon. Quite a simple yet helpful device, actually. I was informed not long ago that larger power sources were difficult to take proper effect in this world, which hinders Doom a great deal, and Doom sees that as a challenge. This minor creation can record many things about its surroundings, as well as act as a go-between between two individuals.

Unlike those magic influenced domkopfs, machines are impervious to mental dominations and magical influxes. Not to say they cannot be blasted to pieces, but they cannot, per say, be turned into a rodent so easily."

The not-fairy folk spun three hundred and sixty degress around at the hip. It's doll-like face betrayed no emotion. "And before you ask....no. No it does not possess any fighting capabilities. It is a FAIRY, not an ogre. A pixie would be but...nevermind that. I suppose it 'could' poke someone's eyes out, but I must remit that it cannot fight. So don't go and break this thing."

He's tossing a coin on this one.

"It is a reconnaissance tool, not a combat tool," she said, nodding. "I can easily see the utility in an item like that. I would not imagine something so small would have great utility in combat without a great deal of careful tooling."

"And yes... there is an advantage to a creation of man, over and above fickle magic. Not that I doubt magic's power, but I trust my hands more."

Exactly the thing an assassin would say, Doom notes.

"I think you will find this creation most serviceable. I myself consider it a paltry creation when placed next to a more in-line combat android.

"Construction on my new chest plate, however, is going well."

"I would imagine the main concern in this is the deplorable lack of high quality parts, considering the sorts of things you've constructed so far," she said frankly. "Your technical understanding is beyond what is in my world, after all."

"I am beyond all things in engineering."

His only reply. Firm. Arrogant. Yet little disbelief might end at the pint sized robot that moved with the lucidity of well maintained tires.

She chuckled thinly and nodded. "I cannot contest the scale of your construction. It is far enough above my own world's that some would call it magic. I would not, but I am a little more familiar with the difference now."
