well it depends on the situation! for example if the party is walking somewhere and there is some suspicious plot relevant guy talking to someone across the street if you roll above say, 7, then your character can notice them and then go talk to whoever they were talking to if they leave but if you roll below 7, then you do not notice them and thus cannot try to interact with them most of the time it is ok if only one person wins the roll, but if no one does then you have to ignore that plot point and sometimes if you roll really high, certain game masters will let you notice other more specific things
