Can anyone tell me about "astral projection"?

Yes. I suppose that is possible. There are triggers out there that can force such experiences to occur without knowing it. Astral projection would be tricky to have occur as an accident. But it is feasible.

There's a reason it requires intense meditation. Traversing the astral planes for most is hard, and a break in concentration during meditation could be disastrous. The astral body could become lost in the astral plane if not careful, or even be destroyed if concentration is broken.

And there are those heavily versed in the astral plane that could trap your astral body there, if they wished.

What sort of consequences would arise on the physical plane if an astral body were to become lost, destroyed, or captured, if I may ask?

Simply put, the most likely is that the body would enter a comatose state. Without assistance the body could shut down and, over time, wither and die. The astral body would still live on without any further negative effects on it. But it's possible the physical body could die without care.

Not to mention that enemies might take advantage of an unguarded body that is traveling to kill it.

So it would be unlikely that a physical body could 'wake up,' so to speak, without the astral body there.

[Okay, maybe that theory is not so solid.]

I certainly will not be attempting the practice myself. I am simply attempting to do the same thing as everyone else who is not preoccupied with delusions of usurpations or merely surviving: trying to make sense of this place and why it is the way it is.

It may. I cannot say for certain, but with the information we have been given, it is the most I can come up with.
