You use batter to make cake. Patting that doesn't do much.

What if you want a certain shape, then patting it would do something, right?

Pretty sure it doesn't work like that. If you want a certain shape, you need a baking pan with that shape.

Patting batter is only good when you want to get it all over your hands to lick it off.

...That's a good thing to do. Maybe it doesn't do anything to bake it but it's definitely an important cake-related skill!

Don't you think it's better to do that with the icing though?

Sure, the icing's definitely better, but that doesn't mean the batter doesn't have its merits! If I have to pick one or the other, I'm going with the icing, but if I don't have to pick, then I can have both!
