Very interesting machine... Allowing anyone to speak from a distance. If only it could be reduced and made portable...

[ He looks up at the camera afterward and nods. ]

Forgive my manners. Like you may have guessed, I am new to this tower. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Lezard, Lezard Valeth.

Speaking of which, this tower is certainly an interesting place… So many possibilities, so much to discover. It's a shame that for us to be here our homeworlds had to die. Such a high price to pay for such little reward….

[ He readjusts his glasses. ]

Does anyone here have concrete proof one way or another as far as the fate of our worlds are concerned? The letter and projection are not proof enough to me I'm afraid, no matter how likely to be the truth it is.

Any group of research that may confirmed the veracity of the letters maybe?

Oh, and I have heard a lot of talks about people sleeping for abnormally long time period. Do such occurrence happen often in the tower?

[ Perfectly responsible? A humans look irresponsible within the eyes of an Ancient Elf and Lezard shan't be viewed any differently by Haldir. While the human certainly looked quite studious, the marchwarden didn't seem the least bit impressed with him.

Curious? Yes, of course he's curious about this newcomer. Haldir is always curious about those who come to this tower. ]

Many anomalies have taken place here in this tower, all of which has yet to be answered or explained.

All of them? Hasn't anyone searched and found answers in all that time? It is quite surprising...

[ Oh, is that...? Lezard barely manages to contain his grin. But the clothes do not really fit, maybe an Aesir. Or simply a similar specie, this tower is full of wonders truly. ]

Though this has not stopped many from succumbing to the easy belief that what they are told must be true.

I would assume you come from a world where you haven't seen such a thing? We have portable devices in my world for communication. They're called cellphones.

A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mister Valeth. My name is Kazutaka Muraki, a resident of this tower for a month or so. I'm afraid the letter is rather concerning... however, have you gone to the fifth floor?

A shame truly. Are there not any ongoing efforts at least? I have to say, remaining in this tower without being able to pierce its mysteries is quite unbearable.

[ Haldir... Okay, the time to ask his specie will come latter. A slight smile. ]

People are the same everywhere I'm afraid. They're being told a 'truth' and cling to it because no matter how harsh this truth is, it's better than believing in nothing.

I'll concede the projections we can see on certain floors are... Convincing, but someone who could built such a place would have no difficulties conjuring such illusions.

You do? Quite fascinating. Are there any available in this place? This would certainly be more convenient.

Sir Muraki then. Yes I have. But those who built this tower are certainly resourceful and without a doubt they have access to great powers, as evidenced by our presence here.

They could have conjured an illusion out of our memories, a small task compared to what they already have accomplished. I do believe their words may be true, the lack of proof is just working against them.

I'm afraid not. I don't seem to have mine on me and I can't say if they'd work in this environment. Cellphones require reception and service providers, you see. Something not quite so easily accessible in this place, it seems.

[ A pause though, shaking his head. ]

Sir isn't necessary. Doctor, however, if you must use a title will be alright. I for one can't seem to decide if they've been telling us the truth or if they haven't. It isn't clear cut, after all. Lack of evidence, surely... or perhaps I still need to come to terms with the fact that my world truly is destroyed.

Either way, perhaps it would be advisable to keep an open mind regarding these matters? Look into it more?

Ah, forgive me. I haven't quite attentive since my colleagues fallen into this deep sleep.

There have been some efforts made, Lezard. However, as it stands, most of them have proven to be fruitless at best. Although, this does nothing to lower the morale of most who seek both freedom and the truth.

It can be. No one seems to have gotten the memo to do that yet, though. [And the network doesn't connect to already-portable devices, either. He could be using his tablet right now. If he had any idea how to, he might be able to fix it himself, but... Sollux isn't particular inclined towards computers unless they're robotic enemies in a video game. As it is, he's stumbling over the unfamiliar machine almost as much as Lezard is, though of course his stoic expression remains flawless.]

[Still, this stupid squishy human seems like he has incentive. That's good. Sollux is honestly not much more familiar with the tower than he is, but he has enough shame to ask some questions of his own.] You're right about the letters being shifty, but why do you think the destruction of the universes is 'likely'?

In the end we all need something to cling to. Something to give us meaning. To give us a reason for being. I do not fault them for wanting such. Only for buckling to such a reason with no evidence.

Agreed. Telling us there is no where else to go to, as well, would serve to try and keep us complacent here. It's designed to keep us from questioning the situation.

In the end it matters little if the world is gone. There are other worlds besides them, and always will be. But I still do not believe they are gone.

Interesting. I'd like to join in the effort, if it is possible.

Forgive my curiosity, but what manner of being may you be? While you look similar to my specie in appearance, I couldn't help but notice the shape of your ears...

Keeping us from questioning the situation, giving us no evidences... Those who saved us certainly sound like they have a lot to hide.

Yet by your words I can't help but assume not everyone in the tower is as complacent as the average human?

I believe they may be gone, but with the state my homeworld was in it is quite an evidence to me. Yet, I can't help but be curious at a force that can destroy multiple universes...

Doctor Muraki that is then. I believe our worlds are gone, but other options are available. After all, nobody said they need our worlds to be gone to capture test subjects from all across the universes.

I agree. I only wish I could find a group that is already settled into looking into those matters. It would be easier and more efficient than starting from scratch.

[ What is he gonna do? Smile, most likely. Hey, you kinda look like his old assistant. Alas, poor Bellion met with a terrible fate... Maybe now Lezard could recreate him. ]

My universe was in a sorry state to say the least, its destruction was predictable. Besides, I know of many artifacts that can bring death to an entire world with ease.

Mind you, if artifacts of such powers existed in my world, can you imagine what kind of power lies beyond?

An elf you say?

[ For a split second, Haldir may catch a gleeful and sadistic glimpse in Lezard's eyes. But that doesn't last, he only smiles like before. ]

....Indeed. If such a force exists it would be worth finding information about it.

Yeah, it's really hard to walk up a few floors when you want to check the network, isn't it? [Kind of a hassle, yes; he carries his tablet around all the time anyway, just in case it one day decides to start working and saves him the time that he could be using to do other, more productive things. But it's not like he isn't used to walking all over the place for no apparent reason.]

Judging from the one in mine, they probably work about the same as yours, except they're a lot bigger and bulkier and take a couple of sweeps to work.
