Um, hello. This message is for the people in charge of the Tower.

I wanted to thank you for fixing all the floors back to the way they were and for even giving us new ones, and for returning our trunks. I know the things inside of them mean a lot to the people here.

I didn't know if anyone had taken the time to let you know that what you did was appreciated.

[ a brief pause ]

It's um...something that I grew up with. I'm pretty good with machines like you are with plants.

Oh! I never realized... so you must feel more at home in this place, right?

Not really. I can't do a lot of things here that I used to back home. The terminals are closed off for me to really get a good connection to everyone else.

With the lack of wireless signals...kinda like how a television works, I can't hear what's going on around me. It's like being deaf and blind at the same time with only a pair of glasses to see and a horn to hear just to know a little about what's going on.

That's the best way I can explain it.

I'll have to adapt. I'm okay. I just can't sense dangerous situations any more and I end up dead more times than I care to admit.

[It was sort of a serious question to him. He didn't want to think that he was being looked at in sympathy either.]

[ That question surprises her, but there's only honesty in her voice and face when she answers. ]

[His hand still on the screen, he smiles and nods.]

I would have talked to you no matter the place. You're very nice and everyone needs a friend.

[It's a lesson that he learned since being here.]

You might think this weird, but you're the first girl that I talked to that I wasn't working with. There was Scheris and Mimori but we were colleagues. It wasn't the same.

I wasn't allowed a lot of interaction because of my job. If I got too personal with somebody, I couldn't do my job properly.

My contact was limited to the terminal.

Like the terminals here in the Tower?

Yes and I was the entire network. I knew everything that came through by terminals or by phone. I controlled the phones, what was seen on the television and how much information I wanted the Mainland to see. I was the system.

Now that I don't hear them anymore, it feels lonely.

[ She didn't really understand what some of those things were, but she could imagine that it was a lot like the network here. ]

That was kind of how I felt as well... after the attack, when I couldn't hear the plants in the meadow or forest. So I know how you feel, Elian.

[His eyes opened at that time and then things started to make sense. Her power was organic. His was artificial but they worked almost in the same way...a connection to something else was their ties to their lives.]

And...I understand how you feel. I'm sorry that you had to suffer when you're used to hearing them. I'm glad it's getting better now.
