[Action for roommates (2-19)
Maka died last week. She'll wake up in her bed, but before then, in the few seconds before she wakes up, there's a flash of light and she transforms, growing blades from every inch of her body, like a flower made of deadly metal with her as the center. As quickly as they appear, they vanish again.

Then comes waking up, and sleep paralysis. For ten minutes, she is trapped motionless in her bed, unable to move any part of her body. She panics, trying to fight it, but there's nothing she can do. It passes, eventually, and she sits up with a strangled screaming sob, shaking, arms wrapped around her torso.

[Eventually, she makes her way to the terminals, and figures out how to post.]

Anybody here know how to fight hand-to-hand? A spar would be a good way to work off some energy after last week.

Scythemeister Maka Albarn. [She smiles back at him, though it's slightly forced.] What's your name?

[That's quite a title. And Allen thought 'his' was kind of imposing!]

Allen Walker, Exorcist. A pleasure, really.

Exorcist? You hunt ghosts?

Something like that. Although the ghosts I hunt are more like demons than anything else. I exorcise them kind of violently, actually.

[He scratches the back of his head.]

I take it you're not familiar with Akuma?

No. What's an Akuma?

[She's blessed by not knowing, really.]

Functionally, it's a demon. A cursed being that comes to life when a human makes a deal to bring someone they love back to life. Instead, an Akuma is created and it takes the form of the human who made the deal. That's the short version, anyway. It is the job of us Exorcists to hunt them down and deal with them.

*Cranes head* I don't suppose you have any job like that, do you?

I'm a meister. We hunt down witches and murderers that eat human souls.

Where I'm from, people come back from the dead without turning anyone into... Akuma. Why is it different where you're from?

[Allen raised an eyebrow. It was more of interest rather than a questioning surprise.]

I couldn't tell you. Only a higher power could. I've seen guys here who look like giant men in suits of armor that are really nice, so I'm just too intrigued to ask a question like that.

[An animate golden orb--the golem, Tim--clambered around from behind Allen, resting on his shoulder. It took notice of the person on the screen.]

Oh! [Maka is a little distracted by unusual shiny flying things.] What's that?

My golem, Timcanpy. Or just Tim for short.

*Realization!* Is Tim really still this interesting to everyone here?

[Tim, despite possessing absolutely no eyes, seems to have its attention on the screen.]

I've never seen anything like him. I mean, I've seen a couple golems before, but they were made of clay, and they couldn't fly.

[Tim craned its "head" at this.]

Tim's kind of special, anyway. None of the golems from where I'm from are his color, for one. [He takes a small bit of one of Tim's wings in between his fingers and pulls at them a little.]

He's really pretty. What does he do?

He's more like a messenger golem: record what he sees and hears, relays messages, and pester me all the time. Golems of his make are supposed to act as assistants to Exorcists, mainly.

[It apparently took offense to that last part--a mouth that certainly wasn't there before opened up and it seems to growl at him. Only no noises came from its mouth, a maw of razor sharp looking teeth.]

And a great friend you are, too, Tim. [He grins bitterly.]

[It really says something about Maka that the teeth don't bother her. Or maybe in her world it's completely normal for things to suddenly have way too many pointy teeth.

In fact, the interaction just seems to amuse her.]

Can he talk?

[The teeth disappear as the mouth closes and it resumes its unknowing focus towards the screen.]

No. Can't say that he needs to.

He seems pretty fond of you.

I would think so. My master gave him to me a few years ago and we've been together ever since. Through better and worse.

That's just boring stuff though. I think you've had it more exciting than me. [He smiles through it, almost laughing as he talks.]

... I could do without some of the recent excitement.

[Undeterred, he continued in the same voice:]

Who is a fan nowadays? I mean what was it like before you came here? Where did you live? Hunting witches doesn't look like it's weighed down on you very much!

Why would it? It's what I've trained for my whole life.

Really? I know what that's like.

[His smile seems unsure of itself, but Allen does not sound like he's joking.]

Least you didn't have to go to India for it. Or pay for your Master's gambling debt.

If Papa tried to make me pay for his gambling debt, I'd make him regret it.

Oh, I plan on doing the same. One of these days...

[A rabidly evil smile descends on his face for a minute or two as he giggles in sinister glee.]

[It fades after a moment back to his usual, gleeful smile.]

So I think you might actually have had it a little better. That's good!
