So Thanksgiving is coming up, at least for the country I was living in for a long time.
For those of you who don't know, there's a historical basis behind it but the main idea nowadays is to get together with family and friends, stuff your faces, watch sports, and think of things you're thankful for.

What's the historical basis behind it?

Honestly the historical origins are kind of ugly. Supposedly the earliest settlers had trouble making it through the winter and the native people helped them with food and there was a big dinner etc.
In reality that's just a story they tell little kids and what actually happened was that they slaughtered the natives and took their land.
People are trying really hard to get away from that part though since most everyone nowadays is like 'wait what no that's screwed up we were wrong'.
