I ain't sure walkin' around swingin' axe blades at anybody behind me is all that safe. But I can't really just stick anythin' on there and hope for the best.

What do people usually use if they wanna put some kinda guard on a weapon? [Counting off the following points on metallic fingers:] It's gotta be somethin' that ain't gonna get in the way of the thrusters, easy t' get off in an emergency, and lightweight so it don't throw me off balance.

[Labrys grinned at that, scarlet eyes bright and cheerful.]

C'mon, it ain't as great as all that. If I got any tougher from the stuff I've been through, it's 'cause I had friends helpin' me out. I'm just tryin' to do the same for anybody else lookin' for it.

You're just as special as me or anybody else, Lancer. So don't get too down on yourself, alright?

[Lancer nods at her.]

I will certainly try. This is all very new to me--the idea that I will have enough time to have friends again and things like that. I don't think it's going to be easy working through all of the emotion, though. I honestly don't know if we were made to worry about these kinds of things, but I am still going to try.

Please be patient with me if it takes awhile. This is all very new to me and I'm only just starting to make the friends I will need to get through all of it.

[He pauses a moment and then laughs.]

How did we ever get from talking about your axe, to this? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to derail your inquiry so much.

S'okay. I didn't even know how to make friends at first. [She laughed, perfectly at ease despite the abrupt change in subject.]

Don't worry 'bout it. I like gettin' to know people better, so I ain't mad about going off track.

There was a time when I had a great many friends, but then I was cursed and things changed. Now it is hard for me to trust what people tell me sometimes especially if it is some form of compliment or flattery. It's even worse if the person I'm speaking to is a woman...

[He pauses and shakes his head to draw himself out of the past.]

I don't know if I know how to make friends anymore, but I would like to think maybe we are moving in that direction....

[He stops suddenly and blushes just a little in embarrassment.]

...if you don't mind that is.

I ain't gonna lie to ya, Lancer. [Smilesmile.] If I say anythin' to somebody, it's 'cause I mean it. Simple as that.

[Labrys laughed at that, clearly amused by his reaction.]

Don't be silly. Course we're friends, if you wanna be.

[He can't help but smile at her laughter. He is being rather silly, isn't he?]

I do. It's actually a relief to find someone who is as honest as I am. I've had so many people tell me that I should be less so since I got here. They say it will only get me hurt, but I can't help but continue to be so. It is who I am, who I have always been.

I don't think there's anythin' wrong with it. Ain't it better to be honest with people?

That is what I believe. It's just a shame that it doesn't seem that it is a very common thing any more. I'm really not sure how the world has managed to survive as long as it has with the people in it being so dishonest with everyone.
