[Standing in front of the terminal, Waver looked like hell. More accurately, like he got the hell to a terminal within two minutes of sleep paralysis wearing off. His suit jacket forgotten, the usual sunglasses were hanging off a collared shirt as black as his disheveled, untied hair.]

[Let it never be said Waver Velvet was an unkempt mess; there were just much more important things to consider right now than his personal appearance.]

I have a question. Technically several, though all geared toward the same subject.

Has there yet been any evidence of limits to this place's resurrection capabilities? An upper limit on times one can return, for example?

And what of side effects: has there ever been any indication of lingering illness or other such afflictions?

You'll have to excuse me if these are stupid questions. I hadn't had time or reason to consider the implications of this until now.

Shame I don't have more students as quick as you. Then again, if they were all that clever already I'd be out of a job, wouldn't I?

That's true..but maybe you could have more time to practice your magic then and keep on improving. I imagine all your students eat up a good deal of your free time.

About as much as a normal college professor, I'd guess. It's not all that terrible. Besides, I'm largely lacking a social life, so it's not as though I'm scraping by for spare time.

Ah, alright then. That doesn't sound too terrible then..plus, if you were fired, it might be hard to keep getting money for books or funding for research.

I was only joking. I'm fairly certain my position is perfectly secure, under normal circumstances.

While your position is probably secure-in the worst sense-back in your universe, you could still teach here. There is a small school up, and people do attend and teach!

Someone did ask me about teaching them magecraft not long after I got here, but...it's a bit difficult. In my world the ability to use something like that has to be refined through years of hard work, or generations of inherited skill. I could try to teach things like that here, but I can't begin to guess the level of success I might have. Not to mention I barely have any idea how my world's magecraft translates to others' abilities in what they call magic.

Waver, don't worry. I know how your magecraft works. I asked the younger one all about it when I first found out about it. I'm not sure what levels of success you'll have here, but I can tell you that while your magecraft works here, other magical systems do. A friend gave me a ring awhile back that allows me to create a storm of lighting or some simple rain, and I don't have any magic circuits. But it still works.

..And I think it's both, to be honest. I'm sad to say that I don't have much, if any, answers to those questions.

If questions like that had simple answers, we wouldn't need researchers like me.

Frankly, I'm fascinated by the idea that abilities like this can come so easily to people here. If only this would apply at home, it would validate every theory I've had for the past ten years as easily as snapping one's fingers.

This is quite true. Not that complex answers aren't good either.

And it is pretty cool to see that so many methods and schools of magic can all work and coexist under one roof! I'm not sure how you would get this to work in your own universe..but if you did, it would blow apart magecraft as you and others knew it.

Nothing would make me happier. To simplify magecraft to a near universal degree...that might be the extreme result of all I've worked for. I would be happy enough to prove effort to be equivalent to lineage, but imagine the faces on the aristocracy if I were to completely prove their bloodlines worthless.

You would be lucky if they didn't go mad from the revelation.

But really..if you managed to get it down to a universal degree, and went back to your universe-assuming they were restored-than you would blow them out of the water. And you would be doing it unexpectedly, as everyone would be years behind you in experience and research.

Knowing my luck it won't be that easy. But if I really could pull that off? That would be perfect.

Well, nothing worth working for in life is easy..but I'm sure you'll be able to pull it off eventually!

Oh, I have every intention of succeeding. Even if I have to do it the hard way. Failure's never been an option when it comes to this.

And I have no doubt that you will succeed, rain, shine, war or Tower. Even if you stumble, you won't let it affect you forever. You'll just keep going.

That's not the point I was trying to make! During the Apollo 13 disaster, new techniques were made, scientists worked on the clock, and, in the end, it wasn't a disaster. The crew survived, and we better learned how to deal with space errors like that in the future! We learned how to deal with space better!

Oh. Well, when you put it that way I suppose it's as valid a metaphor as any.

Exactly..plus, if you used magecraft to go into space one day, that would be pretty amazing.

..But that's a bit off-topic.

Any magus would take one look at the kind of technology needed to stay alive in that environment and have a heart attack on the spot.
