Learned helplessness - Basically, he means he's tried to condition people into thinking that they cannot do anything, Sephiran. You and I may have chosen not to boycott the checkups for reasons other than that, but I suspect that quite a few people were thinking along the lines of "it's just going to hurt us, why bother?"

That's what he means - our own despair at our situation, the fact that people break down when hurt too much, has been used against us.

I am certain this sort of thing need not be said, but... I suggest we prepare ourselves for whatever Jason has planned. Stock up on food, clean water, and the like. It is not likely he would use the same trick again, but last time his plans were foiled, he removed all food from the cafeteria.

I also suggest checking on your loved ones often until we are made certain of what he wants to do. That way, if someone disappears or starts acting strangely, the word can get out quickly.

[Let me preface this by saying that Rick is, by no means, a coding genius--so not only is he having trouble figuring out how to make the filter work in the first place, but its strength is what you would expect of the tower's provided rudimentary security measures. And by that, I mean pretty much anyone who figures out it exists and has a meager grasp of how to crack these locks should be able to do so. It's really bad.]

[It doesn't help that Rick doesn't know the IDs of most of his teammates, so the filter successfully extends to just a few people--Sertoria, Waver, and Enoch--but he's made an attempt at adding Doc and Lucifel by name, which probably will not work. Have fun trying to sort this one out!]
