Truthfully, I've no clue. Though one child I spoke with theorized they're a sort of poison, which would make sense, except that it's not going to affect me, or anyone else like myself, so that obviously cannot be it.

I believe they're a form of technology, at any rate, and certainly not magic. I can't tell you much beyond that.
