[There's Legolas, sitting at a terminal and looking thoughtful. There's a small, leatherbound notebook in front of him and a fountain pen. He wasn't sure if they'd belonged to anyone when he'd gathered what he needed but he could return it all later. In neat script on the first page is a passage written in Sindarin. And below it, a translation of it.]

What is it you miss of home, most of all? What is it, that if ever we return, you will seek out first?

I want to write it all here in this book. I want to make sure that no one forgets what most they miss here. No matter what it is that we endure, we'll need only look into it to remind ourselves of happier times. Times that, with hope, are not forever lost to us.

[Thorin nodded sombrely then frowned. Legolas? Did he just mention his own name?]

Legolas? I do not understand. Why would there be a grave with your name on also?

Because there was another Legolas here at one point. He and I spoke only a couple of times, unfortunately.

A double? I did not know things like this could happen. [Could there be a double of him running around?]

How do you know if you have a double within the tower?

It happens frequently, actually. We've had several Zelda's here. [Okay, they were from different time periods and not the same incarnation of a single Zelda but the point stands.] And quite a few Link's.

You don't, unless you read the names of every resident in the dorms or you run into your twin.

Zelda's? Link's? Are they elven in nature? [What? He didn't know elves from elves.]

No. They may seem if but they're not. Their race is called 'Hylian' and lack the immortality and grace of the elves.

[He just gave a look that said "Do I look like I'm an elven expert?"]

All elves seem the same to me. Tis hard to pick one out from the next.

[You could be, Thorin. You could be.]

'Tis only their ears that give the assumption of being elven. Haldir o' Lorien and I are the only elves in this tower.

[Pull the other one, Legolas.]

Aye. The ears are one thing that give your race away to those unknown to the elven race. ~~[Oh, and how stuck up you all are.]~~

[~~Rude.~~ There's also the aura that surrounds them, the part about being extremely tall and beautiful.]

[Beards are so much more majestic.]

Other things being your height? ~~[Which doesn't mean anything really.]~~

[They're gross.]

Our appearance, our skills, the arts we practice.

[They are NOT gross. Elves wear perfume.]

Aye. We dwarves have similar skills. Smithing, craftsmanship and being strong warriors.

[Don't make assumptions about us.]

As I well know from my time with Gimli. He told me much of your people.

[Touchy. Why did Elrond reek of violets then?]

Aye, he did? A noble dwarf is Gloin's son. [He made a face or remorse.] Was. Alas, poor Gimli.

[Why were you apparently sniffing him?]

He is a good friend, an elf-friend. And I look forward to the day that I can return to Middle Earth revived and fulfill my promise to him and take him across the sea with me.

[What? No, ew. He wouldn't get that close to any elf.]

Then, I wish the same thing, Legolas. It is hard for me to imagine any dwarf seeking to ride into the west with an elf. In my time, it is unheard of. But, this world is different. It does please me some to know that your race have come to appreciate what dwarves really are.

~~[Not bearded, rude, strong, drunk and stubborn creatures.]~~

[Then how would you even know?]

I think he accepted, in part, so that he might once again see the beauty of Lady Galadriel. Gimli is special indeed that she gifted him with three strands of her hair, a gift that no other ever dared to ask for when such a gift she had refused to one of the greatest elves known in our history.

[He didn't. He is just being a rude dwarf because he can.]

I heard that she visited Rivendell when Gandalf and Lord Elrond held council there. We did not stay for such a meeting. [Elven and wizard stuff.] Besides, it was for others, not myself.

Gimli had elven hair given to him? [Uh-what?]

I do not know any such details. For the Lady of Light to leave her forest is a strange thing to even hear of but for when she tore down the walls of Dol Guldur.

[Laughing.]

Aye, he asked it of her and she obliged. To understand the meaning of the gift though, you must know more of elves than I think your race has ever known.

The Lady Galadriel is one of the most beautiful and more powerful elves any shall know and she has lived through times as I will never know. The Lady knew Feanor, who was responsible for the creation of the Silmarils and it is said that his inspiration to create them came from the sight of her hair. Three times he implored her for a single hair and she refused each time.

Gimli received three.

Three? I know not much about the ways of elves but three does sound an honour. [Couldn't she have given something a bit more useful? Nay, he would not be disrespectful towards Legolas. This was indeed, an honour for Gimli.]

Gimli was honoured.

He was. He said that should he return to his home, he would set them in crystal as an heirloom of his house.

[He smiles a little, recalling Gimli claiming he'd looked upon the 'last which was fairest.']

Then, he was a very lucky dwarf. [Thorin raised an eyebrow. Gloin's son really sad this? He found it hard to believe, but took the elf's words.]

He is indeed. And that is hardly even acknowledging the fact that he is the only dwarf that will be permitted to follow the Straight Road to Valinor.

A path none of my kin are likely to take in their lifetime. [Certainly one Thorin will not be taking. Sorry, Legolas. This dwarf intends to die upon this throne, surrounded by his kin and family. Possibly dwarrows of his own.]
