A question, tower residents.

If a person does not have a soul, would you still consider them a person? Are they different from people who do have souls? What makes them different from others?

( ooc: Mami will reply as anon, of course. )

It is a most complicated question. From one world to another, the very meaning of what a soul is differs greatly. Many claim souls to be merely a belief with no rational basis- Therefore in such a system a person lacking a soul would be normal. However, many others believe it to be the immortal core of our existence and what makes us individuals.

Before I can answer, may I ask, what it is you mean by "soul"?

If they act and feel like a normal person, I don't see why they wouldn't be considered one. There's just something a little different about them, that's all.

that really depends
if they look and act and think the same
and they remember the same things
and they feel the same way
then yes, they're the same
just the thing called a soul isn't the sum of a person

[Diarmuid has a pretty good feeling he knows who this is but just on the off chance it is actually one of her students instead, he says nothing. Besides, he's heard how unreliable filters and locks on posts can be and doesn't trust them with something as sensitive as this.]

I can't claim to be an expert on soul removal, but I would question if it is actually possible to fully sever someone's soul from their body. I would think that even if you have some physical proof of its removal, that doesn't mean that it's still not linked to you and functioning just as a soul otherwise would. In which case, does it really matter if it has been removed or not? It is still with you and functioning even if not connected to you in the same way as it originally was.

That you worry enough to ask such a question seems to be proof of that to me, anyway.

I don't think it matters.

My soul is all messed up, but I'm still the same person I was before that happened. I think the same applies if you lost your soul somewhere along the way.

[This question hits a little close to home...] I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean is someone still a person if they have lost it? [Because that sort of happened to her....although she got returned to normal.]

I'm not sure. I don't think I've ever met someone who didn't have a soul. They might have seemed mean enough to be soulless, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't count.

But still. I don't think a soul is all of what makes a person a person.

I've never encountered a living person without a soul. As far as I've ever seen, to have one's soul removed would kill the victim. Is that not the case where you're from?
