[There's Legolas, sitting at a terminal and looking thoughtful. There's a small, leatherbound notebook in front of him and a fountain pen. He wasn't sure if they'd belonged to anyone when he'd gathered what he needed but he could return it all later. In neat script on the first page is a passage written in Sindarin. And below it, a translation of it.]

What is it you miss of home, most of all? What is it, that if ever we return, you will seek out first?

I want to write it all here in this book. I want to make sure that no one forgets what most they miss here. No matter what it is that we endure, we'll need only look into it to remind ourselves of happier times. Times that, with hope, are not forever lost to us.

[Thorin could not believe that people just went missing without being told how and why they died. If they died. It seemed odd to him. Cruel even. Then again, this tower was cruel.]

I am sorry for your loss, Legolas. Nay, our loss. If I ever told Gloin that his son had been lost to this tower....it is not his world. The tower holds captives and does what it wishes with them it seems. Gimli is still alive back in my world.

A reminder? It does not sound like much comfort to me.

And he was alive when last I saw him, both in the tower and Middle Earth. While here he was young, as I knew him when first he and I met, in Middle Earth he was a dwarf with a beard of silver and ready to embark on one last journey.

It is not. But I will tend it as if he truly rested there, to give him the honor he deserves.

[Thorin could hardly imagine Gloin's son with a beard of silver and years behind him. Back home, he was but a wee dwarrow.]

Time is a strange thing, Legolas. So is this tower. A cruel and unforgiving place by the sounds of it. Aye. Gimli deserves nothing less than a decent dwarven burial. [Would Thorin be able to see it? Would he want to? He didn't know.]

I know I should not ask this of you, Legolas...yet, if you need any help in dwarven customs regarding Gimli's grave; I am here by your side.

This place is cruel, there is no doubt of it. If you are here as long as some of us have been, you would never doubt it.

[Heh.]

Gimli spoke little of dwarven traditions. I'm sure that he'd be honored.

[This gives Thorin some hope and maybe he'll get to honour Gimli in a way that no one else could.]

I will like that, Legolas. This is a cruel place, no doubts about that. We have to keep onto whatever traditions and hope remain inside of us.

We do and most have been. It won't be difficult to find Gimli's grave. His name is engraved on it and he's near Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir, Legolas and Idrial.

[Thorin nodded sombrely then frowned. Legolas? Did he just mention his own name?]

Legolas? I do not understand. Why would there be a grave with your name on also?

Because there was another Legolas here at one point. He and I spoke only a couple of times, unfortunately.

A double? I did not know things like this could happen. [Could there be a double of him running around?]

How do you know if you have a double within the tower?

It happens frequently, actually. We've had several Zelda's here. [Okay, they were from different time periods and not the same incarnation of a single Zelda but the point stands.] And quite a few Link's.

You don't, unless you read the names of every resident in the dorms or you run into your twin.

Zelda's? Link's? Are they elven in nature? [What? He didn't know elves from elves.]

No. They may seem if but they're not. Their race is called 'Hylian' and lack the immortality and grace of the elves.

[He just gave a look that said "Do I look like I'm an elven expert?"]

All elves seem the same to me. Tis hard to pick one out from the next.

[You could be, Thorin. You could be.]

'Tis only their ears that give the assumption of being elven. Haldir o' Lorien and I are the only elves in this tower.

[Pull the other one, Legolas.]

Aye. The ears are one thing that give your race away to those unknown to the elven race. ~~[Oh, and how stuck up you all are.]~~

[~~Rude.~~ There's also the aura that surrounds them, the part about being extremely tall and beautiful.]

[Beards are so much more majestic.]

Other things being your height? ~~[Which doesn't mean anything really.]~~

[They're gross.]

[They are NOT gross. Elves wear perfume.]

Aye. We dwarves have similar skills. Smithing, craftsmanship and being strong warriors.

[Don't make assumptions about us.]

As I well know from my time with Gimli. He told me much of your people.

[Touchy. Why did Elrond reek of violets then?]

Aye, he did? A noble dwarf is Gloin's son. [He made a face or remorse.] Was. Alas, poor Gimli.

[Why were you apparently sniffing him?]

He is a good friend, an elf-friend. And I look forward to the day that I can return to Middle Earth revived and fulfill my promise to him and take him across the sea with me.

[What? No, ew. He wouldn't get that close to any elf.]

Then, I wish the same thing, Legolas. It is hard for me to imagine any dwarf seeking to ride into the west with an elf. In my time, it is unheard of. But, this world is different. It does please me some to know that your race have come to appreciate what dwarves really are.

[Then how would you even know?]

I think he accepted, in part, so that he might once again see the beauty of Lady Galadriel. Gimli is special indeed that she gifted him with three strands of her hair, a gift that no other ever dared to ask for when such a gift she had refused to one of the greatest elves known in our history.

[He didn't. He is just being a rude dwarf because he can.]

I heard that she visited Rivendell when Gandalf and Lord Elrond held council there. We did not stay for such a meeting. [Elven and wizard stuff.] Besides, it was for others, not myself.

Gimli had elven hair given to him? [Uh-what?]
